The Vanishing Willows is directly associated to Erskine’s history as the charity’s founder, Sir William Macewen, visited the University of Glasgow one day and requested to use willow trees, spotted in the grounds, to create artificial limbs for soldiers returning from the First World War. It was suggested that Macewen ask permission of the University Court however, that afternoon the trees vanished from the University and to this day we are not sure if Macewen asked not.
